Combination of Dexamethasae and Rituxan?

Daughter(14 yrs) diagnosed in 12/09 and has had two treatments of winro(counts of 15000 and 11000). Otherwise her counts stablized in the 50,000's. She wants to do sports and an option given was to do a combination of Dexamethasae and Rituxan over a 32 day period as a possible cure. Apparently many have gone into remission with this. We are new to all this and wondered about the side affects (told that mood swings happen mostly) and than d and whether we should wait on this treatment. It is said this works better the closer you are to being diagnosed with ITP, which was 6 months ago. And that the more often she gets winro, the more possibility of side affects (none so far).Any feedback is appreciated.

Emma - there have been studies on that combination and while I haven't read that they are a cure, the data does suggest remissions. The problem with those studies though is that they quote good successes, but we really don't see that here.

As for side effects with Dex, most complain that mood swings are NOT the only side effect. Dex can be very hard on a person in the first few days off of the drug. How long would they do the Dex pulse?

Hi

Is your daughter wanting to try knife throwing or bungee jumping or something?? Or is she just doing normal stuff like soccer, bike riding etc.

50 is a decent count and she should be able to do pretty much all sports safely - the only things my son's consultant would advise against at that count would be boxing and rugby. Are you being told that its not safe to do sports with a count of 50? If so, this seems a bit over-cautious.

Good luck with your decisions. Ali

Thank you for the replies. She wants to do field hockey or lacrosse. However, irregardless of the sports - is it worth doing just to potentially go into remission - even though her count is not the worst. It is an option to consider just in general for the future. I am so confused !!!

I know it's confusing and a remission might be worth it, but those are heavy duty treatments. Be prepared! I'm not sure what I'd do either.
