Consistant with the manufactures data, only about 1/3 of the patients respond to retreatment and only 10% show 'complete response'. My first 4-week treatment was in August 2008. The results were good and lasted about 9 months. The retreatment started Jan 2010. Five months later there is still no response. There are some in this PDSA Discussion Group that have experienced years of recovery after retreatment.

There are a variety of ITP treatments available. But we each seem to respond differently and unpredictably to them. The hope is to find one that works reasonably well, works for years with minimal side effects.

What exactly constitutes a "complete response?" I had my first round of rituxan one year and 3 months ago. My counts went from 32 to over 200. My latest count was 242 and bounces around in the 200s. I am hoping that it will continue to last but I always thought that I could always get Rituxan again and that it would hopefully work again just as well. Does anyone have any info. on Rituxan and it's success rate for those it worked for the first time? I would love any info. Thanks!

Natalie

A complete response is counts in the normal range. You had a complete response! You are statistically more likely to have a sustained remission than someone who didn't have a complete response. I had it twice and it worked better the second time - first time 9 months, this time 2 years so far.

It worked longer for me the second time too. Everyone is different, and people can become refractory to a treatment at any time. You can't really count on anything, but there is every reason to hope.

Replying to Erica and Natalie: After my initial 2008 treatment, my count briefly peaked at 120k. It dropped to 65k nine months later. Evidently it didn't quite qualify as a complete response. I guess we could have predicted the retreatment would not have been successful. But I had "every reason to hope".

Erica, where did you get your statistics or what's your info source. It's sounds more up-to-date than what the manufacturer published.

At the PDSA conference last year, Dr. Liebman shared the info about Rituxan remission statistics. I don't know the study he was citing, or if it is published.

Erica:Thanks for the info. I have ordered the CD's from the 2009 convention. I would have liked to attend the 2010 convention but it's the same weekend as my wife's 50th high school reunion......mine was last year.
