  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

Because of my myelofibrosis, I have stopped Promacta. The specialty pharmacy had just sent me three sealed bottles of this very expensive drug--enough for 75 mg/day for a month--and the pharmacy isn't allowed to take it back. Any ideas on if it is possible to donate this drug? Supposedly it is valued at about $17,000, though those of us who have good insurance pay a pittance for it.

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

$17,000 is that for a 4 week supply? UK price for 28 days is $3,073
The NHS gets it cheaper than that. I am of an age where I qualify for free prescriptions but any one who does pay for a prescription would pay $12.19/item. If 3 boxes were prescribed that is the maximum it would cost.

My husband has several times donated unopened, unexpired drugs he no longer needed to the doctors who prescribed them to him. They've been grateful to get them, since they always have some patients who are strapped for funds.

I would love to take those off your hands if that were possible. I have to fight with my insurance every month it seems.
