So i've recently relapsed after 5 years of being in remission from a spleenectomy. The doctor found out that I have an accessory spleen that's grown, and I wanted to know what was the success of another spleenectomy? Thanks

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

How did the doctor determine you have an accessory spleen?

Through a CT scan they were able to find that I had an accessory spleen grow, unfortunately it's a rare occurrence and I can't find many people who have gone through 2 splenectomies. The cases i've read said that long term remission from that surgery, is an even lower percentage than the first splenectomy so it's very discouraging to go through it.

Splenectomy is not so popular now thanks to modern medications such as TPO-RAs, maybe this is why there appears to be a dearth of information out there for you to read. My main worry would be if I'd grown an accessory spleen once would it happen again should I have it removed?

My hematologist wonders if I could have had an accessory spleen that the surgeon missed--since my unsuccessful splenectomy (in 2004). I've told him that I think it is unlikely, and since the first surgery failed (when I was younger--and age did seem to be a factor in success), I was not interested in checking to see if I DO have an extra spleen. I also suspect that since another organ, presumably my liver, has been destroying my platelets for at least 15 and maybe 18 years, a splenectomy would not be a reasonable option.
