My 21 year son was recently diagnosed with ITP. When diagnosed with a platelet count of 13k he was immediately given a transfusion. That was 4 weeks ago. At his last check his count was 68k. With a count of 68, he said he had never felt so terrible in his life, was light headed and had absolutely no energy. He did not have bruising, bleeding or petechiae, so insurance would not pay for a transfusion. A few days later, without any treatment, he still has very low energy but is feeling better. Can platelet count go up on its own? I am guessing that is why he is feeling better.

Yes, thrombocytopenia can spontaneously remit. Sometimes it is acute and can be the result of a virus, vaccine or medication.

What type of transfusion did he have? IVIG or platelet transfusion? Insurance will generally not pay for treatments unless counts are low or there are bleeding symptoms. Treatments usually have side effects so it's best not to treat unless it's necessary anyway.
