Promacta and weight gain? was created by Nomad
Hi! I've been on Promacta two weeks. Seems to be doing well. Prednisone was reduced from 12 mgs to 10 mgs. I have Lupus coagulant so my platelets can't get very high (another story...will post in that area).
I gained twenty pounds on prednisone. I have an event to go to in Feb. I have been excited to get my pred dosage reduced. My appetite is slightly better. I'm motivated. For the last ten -14 days (since in Promacta) I have been ultra strict with my diet. Low cal, low carb, reduced sodium, exercise , lots of water etc. At first no loss. Then .8 loss. This morning I gained 2 pounds! What in the world!?!?! So, I'm up 1.2 pounds. Bottom line...has anyone gained weight in Promacta? I'm on 50 mg but it might be reduced to 25. Help!

I'm a runner and yet still gained weight while on prednisone. When I went off it I lost 30 lbs. I've been on Promacta for almost 3 months and haven't gained any back (that I can't account for thru relaxed eating habits and an injury.) I'm sure your "gain" is simply a water weight issue. I hope you aren't weighing every day. If so, don't!! :-)

Don't sweat 1.2 pounds. Scales are not 100% accurate and anything can throw it off. If you see an upwards trend over the next few weeks, then you might start to worry a bit. It could very well be water weight from Prednisone and as long as you are on it, weight gain is possible. It takes time to lose weight so try not to get discouraged!

Promacta/Revolade is an appetite suppressant for many people. I doubt it is making you gain weight, never heard of that- everyone is different of course.
BUT prednisone will causes weight gain even when you reduce dosage because the side effects get worse the longer you are on it (for many people). That said, its important to taper prednisone carefully and slowly depending on how long you've been on it. I lost the 30 pounds I had gained on prednisone, but I also quit eating sugar and that helped tremendously! Eat lots of veggies, no sweets and give it time. If you want a permanent weight lose, that takes time.
