ITP with borderline HCV was created by rameez878
My mother is suffering from ITP, her platelet count went below 10k, reports reveal she has borderline HCV as well. She had bleeding from mouth and bruise marks on her body. Bone marrow results are attached. Hematologist has prescribed revolade (25mg daily) alongwith prednisone steroid (deltacortil) 45mg daily. He has also advised three to four platelet transfusions (mega kits). Should I proceed with transfusions? As they are very expensive. My mother seems to have improved since she has been using revolade. Kindly guide me more is it due to HCV? Am I proceeding in the right direction? How can I get the platelet count above 150. Your help will be very helpful. Please let me know if you need more information. God Bless you all

Hi Rameez,

ITP is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks platelets as being foreign bodies. Platelet transfusions can be helpful in extremely urgent bleeding situations, to prevent death. The benefit of platelets is very brief, and they can act to further sensitize the immune system. If your mother is not in immediate danger, I would argue against platelet transfusions.

With Revolade (Promacta in the US), the target should be a count of 50, not 150. 50 is a very safe count, and at higher counts there is a risk of blood clots.

I am not knowledgeable on HCV and ITP as a combination. I hope someone else here can help you with those questions.

I'm sorry, but we cannot interpret your mom's bone marrow results. None of us are doctors.

What are your mom's counts now?
