Prednisone Taper

Prednisone Taper was created by Barb111
I got diagnosed in August and started on Prednisone 60mg in September for 2 weeks, then 50 for 1 and now on 40. I had no side effects on 60. My bp was a bit high at 50, so I was dropped to 40 and it's been a week. I now feel achy, headache, and a feel like my heart is pounding at times. Is this what the taper feels like?

Yes, and also what it feels like when the high dose finally hits you. 40 mg's is still a high dose and for some, it takes a few weeks to feel it. I remember the heart pounding very well. The achiness is more than likely from the taper. You're going to feel both for a while.

Ugh! I was afraid of that. Not sure how long I will be at 40. My count is done every Monday. Tuesday this week because of the holiday. Last was 39. Not a huge repsonse on Prednisone. 34, 51, 39. Started treatment at 34 because of a minor surgical procedure I needed and I dropped from 100, 78, 54 and then 34 rather quickly.

Yeah, it doesn't seem to be doing much for you. I'd give it another two weeks or so then suggest tapering off and trying something else.

If you've had the procedure and all is well I'd settle for a count of 30

I agree. I just have to get off the Prednisone. Is there a usual taper schedule from 40?

Not really. All doctors do it differently. If it were me, I'd want to taper by 5 mg's every other week until 10 mg's. I'd go slower then, even using 1 mg. tablets. Some might think that is too slow, but it's easier for withdrawal that way.

Thank you! I will see how he wants me to get to 10 and hopefully that won't be bad. My symptoms now are mostly late day and night. When I take the morning 40, I feel great for awhile!

That didn't happen to me. When I took 40 mg's in the morning, I was so wound I couldn't speak coherently. I shook and my heart pounded. I'm glad that isn't happening to you all day.

Oh, that sounds awful! I felt nothing at 60 or at 50. Started the achy feeling about a week after dropping to 40. And it's not constant or daily. Like today, I'm good. No "off feelings" ever. The heart palpitations are when I am lying in bed at night, but I can usually deep breathe through it.
