Question for Sandi was created by alisonp
Hi Sandi
I need to tap your medical research on behalf of a friend who is considering a splenectomy for her 9 year old son who has had itp for about 7-8 years.
I think I remember that there are some clotting disorders that go along with ITP sometimes.....what are they and can you test for them?
Does a splenectomy make problems more likely if you have one of these disorders?
Thanks in advance ☺

The main clotting disorder that is common with ITP is APS and yes, you can test for it...simple blood test. However, just having ITP or a splenectomy itself can lead to a greater risk of clotting.

Is there a reason not to try NPlate or Promacta before taking such an extreme measure as a speenectomy for a child?

Promacta didn't work and he's on n-plate at the moment but his mum worries about the longer term effects of it.
