I think we often ascribe too much authority to people with "MD" after their name. When it comes to ITP, an average hematologist might see ten cases per year* out of thousands of patients, and their field of expertise is too vast for anyone to keep abreast of all of the latest research in every aspect of their specialty. It really is possible for one layman armed with Google to know more than the average hematologist, yet it is sooooo scary to think of disagreeing with an MD.Other psychologists reported that people's evaluations of the merit of a literary passage could be raised or lowered by ascribing the passage to different authors. Apparently the sheer weight of numbers or authority sufficed to change opinions, even when no arguments for the opinions themselves were provided.

I am a huge skeptic, so if someone tells me that beads and rattles raised their counts, I am not going to believe it. I am always more inclined to believe in spontaneous remissions rather than some sort of lifestyle change. I have tried to have more of an open mind in the past few years though, so I do consider diet changes to be a possibility. But usually if there's no way to prove it, I consider it to be anecdotal. I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

When it comes to my life or the life of a family member I cannot be concerned about being labeled! My cat had a red dot on her chart indicating she might bite - my granddog has a red dot on her chart indicating she might bite - after the tongue lashing I gave my PCP in October 2013, right there in the office hall, before I fired him I probably have 2 or 3 red dots on my chart at the HMO.Aoi wrote: Should a patient question or disagree, the patient runs the risk of being labeled "difficult" or "anxious," two entries on a medical chart that are better avoided.

I think about that too...that we (I) might be stuck in a certain thought process. But there are many articles to back things up and as long as they are current and credible, it's the best we've got. There are many varying opinions here and I appreciate the members that speak their minds. I think that, for the most part, the disagreements here are handled well and give a well rounded version of the issues. Yes, some things do tend to lean to one side, but the good is usually presented with the bad.
