Muscle cramps....help! was created by Maryelaine1
Hi there,
I'm tapering down from 60 mg prednisone and I keep getting horrible foot and lower leg cramping. The only relief I get is standing in real hot water for a good 30 minutes. Anybody have any advice? Please!

Prednisone can cause leg cramping due to potassium loss. Try eating bananas and drinking Gatorade. Also, it wouldn't hurt to ask your Hemo or GP to test it the next time you are there.

Also steroids can cause dehydration. That's because it causes the glucose level in the blood to go up and the body's efforts to get rid of the glucose by passing it out in the urine result in dehydration. So drink lots.

Possibly too late to be useful here, but a recent experience with steroids resulted in fierce cramps in my calves. I discovered through trial and error that iron and magnesium supplements helped immensely. For reasons unrelated to my ITP, I tend to be low in those micronutrients, and when on steroids, the need to supplementation became pronounced, at least in my case.

I am not currently on steroids ( have been in the past) however I do get the leg cramps when my potassium is low. I was having bad ones a few weeks ago. So go with what Sandi said. Also my sister gets them when her sodium is low. Gatorade provides both so worth a shot.
