My doctor wants to start me on Nplate Friday. He wants me to do it weekly for 24 weeks. I am planning on going overseas in April for 2 weeks. Has anyone ever traveled on Nplate or missed a dose. I am scared that this could mess my vacation up that I have been planning to go on for the past year. If anyone has any knowledge on this topic I would greatly appreciate it.

Kennedy,

I was on Nplate for about six months. I did it weekly. However, my counts were around 230 one week and my local hematologist did not follow Nplate guidelines said your counts are high and didn't give me my dose. He should have followed dosing chart and given me a smaller dose.Long story short, on the 10th day after being given the shot my counts were down to 4. So I would not recommend skipping a dose. I think it's best if you talk to your hema and try to set up an appointment with clinic wherever you are going to give you a shot while you are gone. I went to the pdsa conference and they said this could be done. It's kind of a pain.in other countries they let you self inject. I got really tired of weekly appointments and not being able to go anywhere.

I am now on Promacta and it keeps my counts more stable than Nplate with less side effects. It's nice because it's a pill so once my counts stabilized I only have to go for monthly checks. It's really changed my life with itp. However, statistically more people respond to Nplate than Promacta and that's why they usually choose it first. Also, Nplate is a tiny bit cheaper so more insurances will cover it.

Keep me updated with your Nplate experiences!

Thanks for the response. I am just going to talk to hemotogist on Friday. He mention to me that I could get the medicine in pill form (can't find anything online) I am traveling to Egypt for two weeks and I would not even know how to arrange that and only could imagine it would be a challenge. I started researching the drug and started to panic a bit that it could cause me to miss out on my trip :-( I have allready bought my plane ticket.

I agree with Val - talk to him about Promacta. At this point, you have plenty of time to start it and try to get stable before the trip.

N-Plate isn't available in pill from, so he must be talking about Promacta. They are both TPO's and do basically the same thing.
