My 76 year old Dad had his spleen taken out after being admitted to the hospital 4 times since Sept. '13 He's had ITP for several years and has winro, IvIG, nplate, steroids..... Seems that they work for a little while and then don't. The stress of the weekly CBCs and recent hospital stays led to decision fo splectomy. Surgey was on 11/19/13 and went very well (done laparoscopically). Platelets began to steadily rise and right before Thanksgiving climaxed at 350,000 and looked promising. Last night he got mouth blisters and went to hospital today - platelets are at 8,000 :(

Is it common for platelets to rise/fall after surgery? Does it take awhile to level out? I'm not sure what to expect....

I can't tell you what to expect either. Splenectomies often fail days, weeks, months or years later. It's possible that his counts could rebound, but it's also possible that they won't unless he treats.

Sorry to hear that the results were not what you'd hoped for. It's possible that the treatments will give him a better response than he had prior to the splenectomy. Keep us updated.
