I thought I asked this question a couple weeks ago but I can't find it...

Does anyone have success treating with Vitamin C?

I remember seeing it on the forum years ago.

I am not that well versed and haven't been around long but I believe the vitamin c is useful to help some bleeding symptoms, such as bruising and petechia because I thought it aided the strength of the capillaries and blood vessels. What I recalled reading was that it aided symptoms but did not affect the ITP itself...

For my ITP teen, it seemed to help with vessel integrity, lessening bruising and nosebleeds. That's worth the small cost of the vitamin, and a little extra C won't hurt. (A lot of extra C, however, can give you diarrhea. That's a signal to lower the dose a bit.) I would also think it would help prevent some of the colds and other viruses that can rev up platelet destruction, but I've never known anyone to have an increased platelet count because of vitamin C.

I took vitamin C for a bit and didn't feel any better, maybe a little worse but I couldn't say whether or not the vitamin C was the culprit. I try to get the majority of my vitamins from food now though. If I were to try it again I'd eat a lot of high vitamin C food and see how I felt.

One problem though is that people with autoimmune disorders sometimes have problems absorbing vitamins from food. Many people have low vitamin and mineral levels, so it's good to have them checked once in a while.

My regular doctor had my vitamins checked and I was low on D. Now I'm taking a D supplement. I'll finish the bottle of C. I don't think an extra 250mg will hurt...
