Can IVIG stop working??? was created by Drifter
Third pregnancy. ITP becomes an issue each time. IVIG worked perfectly in the past. Would raise my counts to lw 100's in the past, only for about a week, which works to schedule delivery. I had one two day treatment with my first, and as luck had it, my water broke with high counts. I had about eight weeks of treatment with my second, all worked but one, I believed because I had a cold. I am now 36 weeks long... My platelets have miraculously not gone below 44 yet, but I did my first bout of two- day IVIG infusion. Took a count on day two, and they went down! In the past they had already gone up by day two... I go again tomorrow for a count. Praying they're up! can we build a resistance to IVIG?? I am so scared right now. Two little ones at home really need their Mama. Sorry to sound dramatic, but can't help but think of the worse. I know all the numbers needed for natural, epidural, cesarean, and failing which, cesarean under general with direct platelet transfusion. I am still terrified, and feeling selfish for having wanted a third so badly. I just can't wait to come through my front door, with my new addition, and my princes greet us a the door!

Yes, any treatment can stop working at any time. BUT! There are other things to do in emergency situations like delivery...platelet transfusions, steroids, etc. I wouldn't panic just yet, okay? Your doctors will know what to do.

You might end up with a higher count tomorrow. Keep the hope. It's going to be alright.

Just thought I'd update for those who ever find themselves in the same situation, with the same question - in the past, as mentionned, my counts always began going up during the course of treatment. This time not. However, I went from 58,000 Monday (treatment day 1) to 57,000 Tuesday (treatment day 2)to 158,000 (!!!!!!!!) Monday(sixth day post treatment) to 164,000 (!!!!!!) Wednesday day 8) - so basically, each response is unpredictable and can vary. IVIG has NEVER stayed up more than a week for me in the past, nor has it ever brought me far above 100,000... so always have HOPE!!

Hiya - I put something in my splenectomy March 13th thread about IVIG - I was getting a great (but temporary) response for all of January, but then it not only stopped working, but my count went even lower than before, I had more bleeding symptoms and I started getting a reaction to it as well. Like Sandi says, I guess all treatments can stop working at any time but that doesn't mean it's the case for everyone - I got some real benefit out of it for a while, but now I just need to try other things, that's the way of it!

Sounds like you had a good response in the end - hope it continues to work for you!
