It is expensive because it has taken years to formulate and to trial. In fact it is still in trial for children and for long term use in adults. It is just so expensive to bring to market. And as it's for an orphan disease meaning not many will buy it, it has to be expensive to recoup the cost of development. The company hasn't justified itself in England yet so we can't get it at all.

We can get Nplate though but only when the company came up with a pricing deal with our NHS that makes it slightly cheaper. They won't say what deal they came up with as it's a trade secret but it means we can get Nplate as necessary but still not Promacta.

I say England as opposed to the UK because they can get Promacta in Scotland.

Is it not used for cancer patients with platelet problems from chemo? Just wondering. They have meds that stimulate red and white cells for that reason, why not use it for platelets too?
