Is Promacta only for short-term use?

Is Promacta only for short-term use? was created by mngrrrl
My ITP is worsening, with levels consistently below 10,000 without treatment. I've had all the steroids my doctors will give me (although they had a one-two punch against both my ITP and my arthritis), and my hema will not prescribe any more Rituxan. It did have a duration of 6-8 months with 4 weeks of treatment, but she's very concerned about side effects. My spleen was removed earlier this year; no joy. IVIg does OK for a very short duration, as I hear it does with most everyone.

So it seems I'm down to Nplate or Promacta. I'd lean towards the pill over the once-weekly injection because of the restrictions on freedom of movement that the shots imply. However, I just read in the Treatments section of this site that Promacta is approved for short-term use only: 6 weeks. So, my question is, are doctors really limiting Promacta to 6 weeks only? Or are people using it for the longer term?

Thanks for your guidance,
Deb

I've been on Promacta for nearly 2 years now.
Many people have been on it for longer.
