1 Week Post Splenectomy was created by alt8383
It has been a week since my daughters splenectomy( plts now 804K), and she is now getting treated for low hemoglobin due to her antibodies in her blood attacking it. Has any one had an iron infussion? And is there any reprocussions from having to much iron or hemoglobin in the blood? She has also experienced abdominal cramping since her surgery and her surgeon is not concerned, shoudl we be? Thank you for any input.

Those are all good questions for the surgeon, but iron supplements are very common after any surgery that involves blood loss.

There are a number of possible reasons for your abdominal issues after the surgery. You should,
of course, talk to your surgeon. However, there is a lot going on with respect to healing after the
surgery. There may be some adhesions (places where tissue is trying to stick together) which are
creating some of the apparent cramping. You may also still have some of the CO2 bubbles in
your abdomen (although mostly those tend to float towards the shoulders). On top of those,
there may just be some nerve pain where nerves were cut.

For me, the pain issues were very annoying for 3-4 days, and then mild for a few months
(especially the nerve pain). I had intermittent numbness alternating with mild burning on the
surface of my abdomen for quite while.

Nonetheless, I consider my splenectomy a great success. It was 4 years ago, and I have not (yet)
had any issues with either platelets or infections.

Good luck!

Hi
sometimes my anemia levels dropped when the platelets drop though never sure if it because of the platelets or because of the IVIG... whilst they treated the anemia mainly with a full blood transfusion once I received the allocated course of IVIG they knew that the anemia corrected itself when the platelets rise. It don't happen every time - just sometimes....

by the way I had splenectomy in 1994) and as I said in the other post, I done okay as it rose my counts to normal levels and can manage. They drop from time to time but that is better than I had that spring of which they wouldn't rise at all...

and make sure you get properly educated to post splenectomy. I am now on life long penicillan and tell the GP family doctor whenever I see them rather than assume they can read my notes and see. I didn't and suffered as a result and very lucky to be here at all so passing on my lesson learned well. Insurance is a little bit up being post splenectomy but only if I use it abroad and so far never needed to. Though did miss a holiday out right and very nearly missed last new year but that was for platelet drop which they let me out so could catch the train direct from hospital and the cheer when I got there was well worth it and the respect I have earned since in a round about way was well worth it too not that I went for those reasons.... I may be a bit quiet, backward and dependent on others a little - but can pull my finger out when essential
