jgoldman you may want to post this in the "General Discussion for Parents" section under the "Parents of Children with ITP" heading. Also you may want to mention how old your child is and what has been going on with him/her.

Purinethol and Mercaptopurine are the same thing, I believe mercaptopurine is also
called 6-MP or MP-6.

Hi, I have a four year old that has had ITP for over a year and we recently started 6-mp or mercaptopurine. We started with 25mg/50mg alternating days. We raised it to 50mg every day due to counts not holding. He has been on it for almost four months with no real notable side effects. However... There was a recent article from the FDA in regards to 6-mp and there being more cases of lymphoma associated with the drug in conjunction with others and with it alone. I posted it on the site somewhere that will explain better. After speaking with his hematologist, I did not feel it worth the risk even though she felt like the drug was safe. Good luck with your decision! It has kept my sons in the 30's.
