Hi,
My husband was diagnosed with ITP on Oct'09.
He was on prednisone but when it was tappered count started to reduce.
He took Rituxan but he had no effect.
Dr said to go for Spleenectomy.
He went surgery on Feb 5 2010

After 2 weeks feb17 count was 444000.
He came out of Prednisone completely.
Again on March3 the count started to decrease - 144000
After 1 week on March11 it came down to 104000.

Really its becoming stressful. Can anyone suggest what course of medicine we can go next or simply we can wait?

At this point his platelets are still at a safe level so waiting seems smart. They might stabilize at a safe level, it's too soon to know.

If they drop too low, you could try Rituxan again, it is possible I think that it could work differently now that he is spleenless. Then there are a number of other drugs to try including nplate and Promacta, the newest ones that increase platelet production.

You should read everything on the PDSA website, including the treatments page!
Good luck,
Erica

And she was!

Every one is different...just try to hang in there. A count over 100k is a very good and safe count for someone with ITP.

I had my splenectomy in August 09. My counts initially shot up over 600k but like your husband's started to drop 2 weeks later. After a month of declining counts I hit a low of 26k. My doc started looking at other treatments, but 3 days later they went up to 55! They have continued to climb despite tapering prednisone. Hovering for awhile in the 80s then again in the 100s. I've been off of Pred for more than 6 weeks now and two weeks ago (6 months post-op) my count was in "normal" range. So don't give up just yet...
