I took prednisone for 3 months and tapered off of it completely in february. However once I started tapering my hair started to fall out. Has anyone else experienced this? Two months later I've lost over 1/3 of my hair and it is just getting worse. Please, anyone know how I can stop this? My doctor recommended Nioxin...does it work?

Yes, it can be a common side effect. Some have it worse than others. Prednisone messes with hormones which can cause hair loss.

I don't know if Nioxin works, I haven't tried it. Here are some reviews:

In the meantime, when I had awful hair loss (all in one spot, not thinning, a huge bald spot) I got a lot of comfort from wearing several of the wonderful head scarves called 'Buffs', they come in beautiful colors and patterns and are very comfortable and can be worn in a variety of ways. These are the head scarves you see them wearing on the TV show Survivor. You can google them, I ordered them from the website but they also are carried in some sporting goods stores. In fact I got compliments on them all the time and nobody seemed to realize I was wearing them due to hair loss.

I, too, have had a lot of steriods since 2006 (when I was first diagnosed). And, I have had continuous hair loss to the point where I can't fix my hair to look that great. So, I finally invested in some quality wigs (my husband really likes the wigs--says it looks a lot better). Now, I just wash my hair and go natural while at home, but when I go somewhere, I do put on the wig. It is so convenient; I am ready within a half hour and out the door. There are meds you can take to bring back your hair, but I was worried that it would affect my ITP.
