I've had a really bad cold for about a week. I think I'm going to see a doctor tomorrow. Anyways, it got me thinking- is it okay to take prednisone when you are sick? Does it slow the healing down? Just curious.

Hi Lorna,

The week I was sick I didn't stop taking my pred. I don't think it hindered me getting better.

If you're already taking Prednisone, you can't stop taking it. Sometimes Prednisone is prescribed during an illness (such as bronchitis) because it helps inflammation.

I'm on 20 mg's now and have been sick for a week and a half. I don't believe it's made a difference in the length of time it would take to get better.

For the two years I was on prednisone I was surprised to find I was not getting sick more often. But I'm not around children very much which I think is a pretty big risk factor for colds and viruses.

I'm thinking you should not stop taking it. It's not good for you body to just stop the prednisone. Gotta taper it.
