How do doctors determine what dose to prescribe pred? I don't understand why I hear doses as high as 200mg/day and months of tapering when I'm on 20mg/day for 5 days. I don't see my dr until Tuesday, but already my bruises are healing. Bruises that usually take me over a month to heal.

So why the huge differences in dosage?

The dosage is determined by ones weight. The heavier, the higher the dose.

Different doctors do different doses. It should be based on weight, but I don't think most docs follow that. Usually, 60 mg's for a few months is typical. Your dose is pretty low. It could work to get your counts up, but I'm not sure if they will stay there for any period of time.

I read it was weight-based too, but my husband was put on 60mg/day for transverse myelitis at 175lb, and my hema put me on 60mg/day for my ITP and I'm 122 lbs...

Evil stuff, I've tapered down to 30 mg/day now but the side-effects have not decreased proportionately to the dosage.

12/13/10 counts too low for their machine to measure.
PLT transfusion brought me up to 12k
2x IVIG in-patient with Pred
1x IVIG out-patient at 60 mg pred/day
12/16 76k
12/22 320k and dropping Pred to 40 mg/d. Yay!
12/27 336k, dropping pred to 30!
1/5 227k down to 20mg pred
