Perceived risk of stroke was created by MaryArisaig
Hi all, I was a member years ago but dropped out. I've had low platelets since age 4 and I'm now 66. Over the last year my blood pressure has risen and I now feel myself to be at risk of stroke. Has anyone else had this experience and can I ask what you did about it? Many thanks members.

If I were you I would be thankful the high blood pressure has been discovered - it is the silent killer as I'm sure you know. I do hope tha that you and your doctor are getting your high blood pressure under control!!

Hi Mary,
Has your doctor been able to give you any medication to help control your blood pressure? Mine always seems to go up while I'm on Decadron treatment--but I do have a blood pressure kit and monitor it at home. A lot of the treatments they have given me either makes my b/p go up and sometimes it goes down very low.

My blood pressure has always been perfect, it has only ever been high when I have been in pain

Thanks Sandi, Melinda, DeeDee Marie and Angel85. I suppose what I'm really asking is - do you, or your doctors, see high blood pressure as a stroke risk of a greater degree than the risk to people with normnal platelet levels?

No, i don't see it as being a greater risk and my doctors have never been that concerned with it either, that could be cause like i said mine is always usually perfect. I am concerned i might have issues with it later in life, but thats only because i have a family history of high blood pressure. My dad is currently on tablets to lower his blood pressure.

Since I am in your age group (62), I think it is important to do what you can to try to keep b/p in a more normal range. I have read that because our platelets are "sticky", we could be at risk for more cardiac problems. So, we need to do what we can to try and help ourselves. Taking a blood lowering medication is important if you need to. Also, try to get some exercise in--like walking--or whatever you enjoy. I try to do some exercise 5 days a week; this seems to help.

As far as pain goes, the doctor told me it's normal for blood pressure to go up when you are in pain. Mine has always gone up when I am in pain.

Mary - the answer to your question is that it depends on your platelet levels. Very low platelet levels could raise the risk of stroke with high blood pressure. The trick is to get the BP under control.
