Coughing up blood

I've been coughing up blood on an off for about a month now and am strating to get frustrated with my hemo's lack of response. It's not every day, and it's not all day but it is really really annoying. It's mostly blood tinged mucus but after a coughing fit I have the coppery taste in my mouth for hourse regardless of how much water/soda I drink to kill it. The most puzzleing thing is that my counts are at 58K! That's HUGE for me. My last round of Rituxan was in April/May and I've had no treatment sence then.
My Dr ordered the PT and PTT tests (clotting time tets) and chest xrays but that was last week and I still haven't heard back from his office at all. Normally I love my hemo but I'm starting to freak about this a little and he doesn't seem concerned.

dont blame you feeling worried.

Do you feel brave enough to ring the office and ask about them - highlighting what you have done here about it worrying you? At the worst they can tell you they are not ready yet. I know in England there is a protocol about not giving information over the phone, good or bad but it might help you?

If I were coughing up blood I think I would see my MD - that's me though.
Also if it has been a week since the x-ray was taken I would call the office to see if the results are in, tell them you are worried since you haven't heard anything yet.

I called them this morning and talked to the receptionist who said she would have a nurse or the Dr call me back. I haven't heard from them yet but if they are waiting on the Dr then I know he doesn't get done with his hospital rounds for at least another hour. Yesterday was the worst day of it, though today seems to be better.

I honestly hadn't even thoght of going to see my GP my brain is just so tuned to go to my hema with anything bleeding related, but I guess there could be other reasons. If I don't hear from my hema by the end of the day I guess I'll call my GP's office and get an appointment with him.

Or you could just go to the ER. Coughing up blood isn't good for anyone. Please get checked out and let us know how you make out.

I think I'd see a doctor other than a hematologist for that. I don't think it's ITP related.

I agree, I'd be getting checked out straight away by a doctor. I'd go to the ER as your GP will probally end up referring u there anyway. Let us know how u go.

Definitely something you should check out for your own peice of mind. Is the cough because of post nasal drip or is it a deep chest cough like broncitous? The fact that you still have the coppery taste in your mouth might suggest that you have a capillary in the nose that's weak or allergies causing a minor bleed that's draining like post nasal drip versus showing up a true nose bleed. I'll have slightly bloody mucus when I'm getting over a cold or my allergies are really flairing.

After many tests and several weeks of coughing up blood, it went away. My doctor is stumped, but I'm just happy to no longer always have a copper taste in my mouth!

Hi,

I was coughing up a little blood too but my platelets were down to 5,000. I realized that when I ate something without chewing it up really well, it was scraping my throat and causing a little bleeding. My doctor said to watch the stool to see if it is tarry. If not, the blood is very minor. Sure enough, it stopped after a day.

I also had some blood come up after a sinus reaction to a windy day. Very common for me. Cold ice water helped and sudafed. Don't know if you can take that.
