My platelets have suddenly gone up was created by miamimom960
I was diagnosed with ITP 12 years ago. Platelets have ranged from 20-80. I have recently been diagnosed with Lupus, multiple autoimmune symptoms. My Rhuemotologist put me on plaquenil which helps joint pain but lowers platelets, my platelets went down to 20 and I had to have them monitored for several months, suddenly they have jumped to 137, 147 now 157, they have never been this high since 1996. I don't get it????? Also my Lymph count is below normal now???? Any ideas?? My Rheumy doc says that I may have moved out of the ITP and into full blown Lupus?? My hemotologist doesn't get it. Only thing different is my Thyroid meds have been doubled because of hoshimotos disease(another autoimmune)

I've been in ITP remission since I began taking Plaquenil also. My thought is that when the primary cause of Lupus is treated, ITP remits. Also, Plaquenil is known to inhibit antibodies, so perhaps it hinders anti-platelet antibodies. Who knows? This isn't true for everyone with Lupus and ITP; some still struggle with low counts.

Low white cell counts often go hand in hand with Lupus. Just another symptom.

Miami mom, how long ago were you diagnosed with Hashimoto's? Did you have another, different thyroid condition before that?

At the conference, both Dr's Liebman and Gernsheimer mentioned that they've seen patients counts climb when the start treating an autoimmune thyroid condition. You may never know, but hopefully you'll feell better with that big an adjustment in your thyroid meds. I know I have to keep my TSH in the 1.5 to 2 range to feel good.
