Need help in understanding cbc results was created by kievselva
Hello everyone,

Yesterday we did cbc for my wife. 10 minutes after the test the lab assistant had informed us that the platelets count is 22k from automated counter and told us that they will be doing manual count. After manual count they sent the complete results with Platelets count at 62k.
Please advise, is it possible to have such a big difference?
Which one we should take for correct one?

Please help me with your inputs and advice on this.

Selva
P.S.
She is currently on 100mg Azothioprine (since 13th April) and we started homeopathic treatment (since 6th July). For the last 3 months the counts are at around 25-30k.

The automated counters have algorithyms that tend to look at the "size" of the components to count them. As the bone marrow processes put out platelets they are big and plump, and the size gets smaller over their 7-10 day life span. For those of us with overactive immune systems most of ours can be young and fresh and miss counted as other blood components. The good news is that big plump platelets work better to stop bleeding. While there can be human error in manual counts they may be more correct for ITP patients. The other concern is "clumping" if the draw is done a lab draw station and sits for some time before it goes to the main lab for processing. My count is always higher in the Hemo office than going to Labcorp or SenoraQuest draw centers.

Hi Bunnie,

Thanks a lot for your inputs.
Its convenient to take bigger number as the right one.
But want to be more sure.
Hematologists in India and UK also seem to trust the manual count more than automated counter's results.
But then, when we were in India we got only one result and never knew which numbers came out of automated counter.

Take care,

Wishing you good health and high platelet counts.
