Don't give up - there are still Rx options post splenectomy. You've only lost a few and perhaps they had already been tried without success in which case you wouldn't have lost anything.

I totally understand, my daughter had her spleen removed when she was 19, she is now 27 and still ups and downs with the platelets. Last count below 10k. I agree with you that it is difficult to know what to say that will be encouraging. She too was very athletic. Good luck.

It's sad when a treatment doesn't work for u, but in saying that you should never get your hopes up too high on any treatment otherwise your just in for disappointment. You would or at least should have been told it wasn't 100% guaranteed to be successful, I hope u do find something that works for him, but let him know people can and do live a normal happy life without treatment. Most people still can do all the things they did before being diagnosed with it. It is not the end of the world and his life is not over. If he is having so many problems trying to deal with it, he may be best to speak to a professional about his feelings. I have several other medical issues on top of the low platelets and I am not willing to just roll over and die. I am prepared to fight and do whatever it takes to make myself healthy and feel good about myself. Even if my platelets stay low, I just try to keep a positive attitude and having my very supportive loving family around me and that helps me get through, so as hard as it Kay be, u need to stay as positive as u can around your son because he picks up on every feeling u have and if your feeling depressed and upset about it, then so will he.
