Hey Guys,

I just wanted to update you on whats been happening with me. My platelets have been flucuating between around 5 and 11 the last few weeks.

They were 5 on Friday, and by monday I had 3 short nose bleeds that started for no reason and also some bleeding when i went to the toliet, so i had a visit to the hospital yesterday and had a blood test.

They had gone up to 11, but because i had symptoms of bleeding, they decided it was time to give me a boost with a one off platelet tranfusion, so i had my very first platelet transfusion yesterday afternoon.

I have another blood test on friday to see what they are now, but the bleeding symptons seem to have gone, so i have to assume that all is well so far with the platelet count and i haven't had any reactions to it, another good thing is i don't feel as tired or look as lethargic as i had been, so i think it has done me a world of good, of course i don't want them to be an ongoing thing though.

I see my Hematologist in 2 weeks today and we should have the results of the bone marrow tissue typing we did a couple of weeks ago, so we'll talk to the doctor and see what he and his other work colleagues and the bone marrow specialists in sydney think.

I was doing better till I had a car run into the back of me this morning on the way to work, I spent something like almost 12 hours today in emergency cause I had pain in my stomach where I hit the steering wheel and where the seatbelt was. They did an X-ray and ultrasound and fortunately no damage or bleeding, and it looks like just internal bruising. Platelets after Monday's transfusion was 19, but the hematology unit decided to do another transfusion to try to help minimize brusing and any possible bleeding, so all in all I had a pretty crappy day after waking up feeling really good about things

Hi Lauren,

You did not have a good start to your day at all! What a shock it must have been for you. I am so glad to hear that you are okay, apart from being shaken, shocked and bruised.

It is good that they are trying to avoid any unecessary bruising or bleeding, but I am surprised that they chose a platelet transfusion over something like Intragam, which has a more sustained response in general.

I hope they will monitor you over the next couple of days to be careful and make sure that you are okay.

Let us know how you are doing.
