No that isn't a side effect of ITP. It is possible to bleed into joints though I haven't heard of it happening hardly ever. It could be a side effect of some drugs for itp such as steroids. Or it could suggest something else is going on, you should report it to the doctor and have more tests, perhaps at least for lupus and other auto immune issues.

I did have joint bleeds when my counts were below 40. They were particularly noticeable when I was exercising hard. I would sometime feel a sudden tiny 'pop' in my knees, followed by quite a bit of pain. The next day there would be big bruises on the sides of the joint. When my counts were below 10, these bruises would continue spreading all the way down the sides of my legs. My knees normally don't pop and crack, and the sensation was not like a normal joint pop. I assume it was the feeling when a little pool of blood which had leaked out of a vessel suddenly escaped.

I know normally 40 is considered a fairly 'safe' count, but there are plenty of activities one can do which apply a lot of stress and trouble at even fairly decent counts.

This issue only occurred in joints under a lot of pressure, such as knees. I do have pain in all the other joints, but not associated with bleeding. I have psoriatic arthritis. Note that this is another autoimmune problem. Quite a few people on this group have more than one autoimmune issue, and a lot of them can cause joint swelling, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis. There are probably others, too.

I have joint pains in the neck shoulder and back when the platelets get below 2k. I always thought it was my itp because it is consistent at these levels

I have to say that when my counts are dropping... everything hurts. Its not the norm but it does happen. I'm guessing what ever it is that is triggering our counts to drop is effecting everything. Not everyone has that some folks have their counts rise and fall with out any real symptoms.

I have joint pain in my elbows, knees, wrists, ankles fingers and toes and I am going to a rheumatologist Thursday. Not sure if its ITP related.

I do not think joint pain is ITP related. Some of the treatments can cause joint pain or arthritis, especially steroids. Feeling achy or stiff is one thing, I've had that from Prednisone. But you have to distinguish that between true joint swelling or inflammation that can be debilitating. If you have on-going, severe pain, it is probably a symptom of some inflammatory process going on and needs to be checked.

I had severe pain in my knees,it was the worst pain -- felt like someone was smashing my knees with a hammer. I even went to the ER for it. They said it was not ITP related and they checked for blood but there was none. I have heard a lot of people with ITP complain of joint pains. I think it must be related to the treatments that people are on when they experience the pains.

This is how my ITP is related to my joint pain: when my platelets are low, my dose of prednisone is higher. When my prednisone is higher, I have less joint pain because of the anti-inflammatory effects.
