Does everyone with signs of small bleeding and low counts (5.3) go to the hospital, or do you stick it out at home? Don's doctor reluctantly released him from the hospital on Sunday with a count of 4 but no bleeding. Now that he's home, he's bleeding from his cath, we went to the hemo for a blood test yesterday and he's now a count of 5.3. Nurse said it wasn't a major bleed, but then of course said "if you start bleeding be sure and call us". He will get his next Nplate shot on Friday (it will be his 2nd). This morning, he only showed signs that it was an old bleed (dark red staining) not bright red, but I'm at work and worrying. Do you got to the hospital with any bleeding or just major with that low of a count?

Our most trusted hemo gave us the guidelines of under 10 is my panic button. Anything under 10 and I am very concerned there can be bleeds in places that we can't see is what worries me But, my son is also very active. Anything under 20 and my son receives IVIG as well as the scheduled nplate. I'm sorry you have to be at work and try to deal with this.

I've never been hospitalized, even under 5. My hemo just told me to keep doing what I normally do (work, shop, clean, etc), but be careful. That always cracked me up because sometimes you can't control falling or someone hitting your car. The only time I didn't stick to work hours was when we had an ice storm. I went in late that day.

Anyway, my situation was different because my count would rise within a few days with steroids. I didn't have low counts for long.

Thanks for your input. We're learning real fast how unpredictable ITP can be and how hard it is to get it manageable. Don stopped bleeding, for now, but he's getting lots of petiche on his foot so I don't know if his count is going down or because he was a 5.3 yesterday, that's enough to cause them. Anyway, he's scheduled for another CBC and his second Nplate shot Friday morning. We talked with his hemo last Saturday, and asked if he would considering doing another IVIG since that brought Don out of the single digits the first time, figuring it would give the Nplate a little time. Doc said he didn't want to combine treatments, he was going by the book. Oh well, he said he's had a lot of success with Nplate so I guess he knows best. Heres hoping something starts working. Everyone is so great on PDSA forums, it really helps.

I think if there Is any time when u feel worried or concerned, then u should get him checked out by either his GP or hospital, mine and my mums gut instincts are usually right and it is better to get him checked out if your worried then to constantly be stressed out

Everyone is different. Our thresholds differ.
I was hospitalized one time for ITP. My family physician had the count done and she freaked out a little that it was only 10k and had me go to the ER immediately. By the time I got there it had dropped to 4k. Spent a few days there getting above 20k.
However, after that I have never been hospitalized for low counts again. I've hovered around 15-30k (depending on treatment, the weather, and the mood of gnomes) for the most part for years. You eventually learn where your own danger point is and how to cope with living on low counts. It is a learning process for your doctor(s) also.
I no longer freak out at a 10k count, or even a 4k count. I take care, but it's not a freak-out thing any longer.
Life goes on.
