CAUSES!!

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has read or know anything about amalgam fillings in your mouth, which are the silver ones? Could this have triggered ITP? I am thinking of having the two removed and get composite resin instead. There is a holistic dentist where I live and they recommend having the silver fillings removed?
I am desperate to remove anything that may be triggering my ITP. I am on 25mg prednisone and every time I lower I crash!

You'll probably get a bunch of other responses on here but when I first got diagnosed, I also posted about the possible causes for my ITP and I expected everyone to tell me I might be onto something - but what ended up happening is that people told me that although a bunch of things could have been the original trigger, changing those things now will still leave me with ITP.
I still always come up with stuff and wonder wonder wonder away - but then reality strikes again and I have to focus on living with it and/or pondering my next treatment option.
I, like you, crashed every time I got off the Prednisone. It's very frustrating.

I say go for it! It isn't going to hurt to try. It may be beneficial in the long run..

My dentist, who is very scientific and research oriented, told me that removing the fillings potentially causes more problems (or at least more exposre to mercury) than leaving them in. Removing them causes more exposure to the mercury by exposing it to the air and all the grinding and so forth. She said when the fillings are in place they are enclosed and the body is more or less insulated from the substances in them.

I do not believe that changing out your fillings will cure you of ITP, and certainly there has been no evidence to suggest that it would.

It is so frustrating to be sick and it's easy to think there must be some sort of fix, our bodies are complex but still chemical and mechanical machines. But then you see people with all the resources in the world, money and access to the best minds and best treatments, like Michael J Fox and Parkinsons, or Steve Jobs and liver disease, or Stephen Hawkings and Gehrig's (ALS), and you can see there aren't easy fixes for these things.

Erica - VERY well said. ITP is no easier to cure than any other autoimmune disorder. If it were, they would have found it. There has been, and is, a lot of research being done.

If it would make you feel better to change the fillings, do it.

I have 1 filling - it's made with the stuff that you're having put in and I still developed ITP. I highly doubt it caused it. I still think that ITP is more likely to be linked to something viral - an infection which really challenges your immune system, causing it to malfunction. There's an auto-immune disorder for every possible cell in the body, so it's more coincidence than anything that we've all landed up with ITP as opposed to anything else.

By all means, have it done for cosmetic reasons - buut it's not going to cure you.

I agree very well said Erica...I guess being in this position I am grabbing at what ever I read on the internet!!
I just have to be very positive, which I have been and accept and hope that one day there will be a cure for us!!
