Have you ever known a dog with ITP?? was created by Michelle
My brother's dog might have ITP. She's hospitalized right now for further tests but her platelets are low and the vet said steroids and maybe a splenectomy will be needed.

She's pretty yappy as it is - I wonder how she will be on steroids.

Poor thing but - That's so interesting!!

I haven't "known" one, but, early in my child's diagnosis, I was desperately googling for ITP info, and the most recent articles I found at that time were veterinary topics related to dogs with ITP. I'd forgotten about that until I read this post. (I'd like to block most memories of that scary time.) Anyhoo, do they give the dogs IVIG? Or just steroids?

One of my dogs was briefly diagnosed with ITP. It turned out that there was some sort of lab error, she didn't actually have it, but it was kind of funny and weird, the vet was sort of panicked and I was just trying to find out what a normal platelet level for a dog is and she didn't even know! I explained that I had ITP, she thought it was pretty weird too.

LOL! That is so funny that you post that. A while back I was considering getting a Bichon Frise from the newspaper. It was an impulsive thing. Well, I googled up on the breed since I was unfamiliar with it and read on wikipedia that the one medical problem they frequently have is ITP. It then went on to describe what ITP was! I thought WEIRD!!!!!!! I ended up not getting the Bichon b/c it wasn't the right time. But, I told my parents it seemed like we would have been a perfect match! lol! Can you imagine a dog on steroids? They eat everything in sight as it is! I ended up getting a Yorkie this summer and I'm glad I did....I guess I don't have to worry about him and his platelets *knock on wood.*

*Here's to high platelets!*

Apparently from what the vet told my brother, average platelet count for a dog is around 36,000.

Too bad that's not the norm for a human - a bunch of us wouldn't have this condition!
