what do you think the causes for itp are ?

i will begin with myself, i think may be one of 2 reason

1-when i was 5 i was exposed to radiation :
do u know the m/c in the airport where u put your luggage. well , i was just five & i thought it would be fun to go in it with the help of my elder sister of course :(
would it have been the reason of my itp ? , i was diagnosed with itp 13 years later :side:

2- the time that i got ITP i was very stressed very sad , may be that what caused my ITP

It could be any number of reasons, i think it would be hard to pinpoint a reason if you didn't have any sort of sickness or shots done not long before you were diagnosed. It could be either of those two reasons u mentioned, it maybe something totally unreated to those two things. I don't think knowing is gonna change anything though, because it is something that can't be undone now.

That would be an x-ray machine?
In the past 57 years I've had countless x-rays; dentist, broken bones, CAT-scans, etc. Most people are exposed to x-rays many times for medical and security reasons. Since very few people get ITP, this would not lead one to conclude that x-ray exposure causes ITP.
From what I understand, there can be many causes of ITP. In my case, auto-immune diseases run in my family on both sides. For me it was simply "hereditary". My twin sister (yes, her name IS Jill) has a similar platelet disorder, but not ITP.

More likely your ITP (albeit unkown to you at the time) was the cause of the depression, not the result.

I think ITP is caused by a hereditary predisposition and a trigger(s) comes along and sets the chain reaction. Could be a medication, illness, stress, any number of things.

If you hadn't been exposed to radiation, chances are, something else would have occurred that you'd blame it on. I was diagnosed after a bad cold, but as we know, many people get colds without getting ITP.

I've always been anemic, ever since I was a little girl. My doctor said that I've probably always had ITP, but it was dormant. The stress of the pregnancy is what caused it to surface.

Lots of things emit radiation in some form - those things include mobile phones, your TV and your computer - I think it highly unlikely a trip in the airport xray machine would've been the cause. I've also had countless x-rays for my teeth, one wrist, both knees, both ankles, both feet and my chest - and so do plenty of other people who've never developed ITP or any other auto-immune disorder. The as yet unknown cause has to be something that affects the way your immune system works and i'd say it'd be more likely to be viral.

I doubt that ITP can be dormant, just undiagnosed or not bad enough to follow up. 11 months before I was diagnosed, doctors were investigating abdominal pains and did a blood test as a matter of course - I don't even remember them mentioning my platelets at the time, but as part of investigating my ITP, they looked back at previous FBCs and there it was, platelets at 78. It may well go back further.
