I was diagnosed with ITP in 2008 when I was pregnant with my son. He was born healthy in September 2008. His platelets were tested when he was 6 months to 1 year and they were normal (high 200s I think; but of course, every bruise he gets I worry about!). He needs to have his MMR vaccination but I have read that the MMR can trigger an autoimmune response. I am very nervous to give him the vaccine if it could trigger ITP or another autoimmune response. Anyone know if he would have a greater chance of that since I have ITP (one other autoimmune disorder in family, my father has crohns)?

Anyone diagnosed with ITP and then their child(ren)? Does it tend to run in families?
What have others done re: vaccinations for their children, especially ones believed to trigger autoimmune responses?

Thank you!

Tough question you asked with no easy answers. The MMR has a risk of triggering ITP even without having a parent that has it. Some of the children here developed ITP after the vaccine and ITP is a known side effect.

However, there is also a good chance that your son will never develop ITP, and I'm not sure I'd base any decisions on the fact that you have it. If your son has a hereditary predisposition to autoimmune disorders, chances are something along the way in his life will trigger it at one point or another.

My sister had ITP prior to the birth of her daughter. Her daughter is 25 now, had all the vaccines, and never had ITP. I was diagnosed after all of my children were born, and none of them have ever had ITP. My daughter did develop Graves Disease though, so the autoimmune trail goes on.

MMR has a bad rep for sure. An acquaintance has a grandson who is one of a set of triplets that has autism for which vaccinations seem to be suspected trigger. She's big on telling parents to see if they can locate vaccines that don't have the silver nitrate for preservatives because they think it may be the link. Might be worth asking your peditrician about.

Antidotally, I've had the MMR many times, because I didn't develop ammunity to the "German Measles" until I was in my late 30's which is about the time my ITP was diagnosed. Every time there was a measles outbreak, I had a titer and when it showed no immunity had aother shot, since you can't get a isolated version anymore. However, like Sandy, there is an autoimmune predisposition in my family. Both sides have thyroid disease, diabetes and some rhumeatoid arthritis so who know what my trigger really was.

There's a doctor here just been struck off the register for reporting, falsely they say, on a link between MMR and autism. What's the official line over there?

I'd go for all the vaccinations. Measles can trigger ITP too and probably does so more often than the vaccination. It can also cause other, permanent problems. I have a friend whose daughter had eye damage from measles and have also nursed patients who had brain damage from it. I think I'd rather risk a brief brush with ITP than that.

Ann:

They change their minds about the MMR/Autism connection so many times you can't keep up with it. Basically, it depends on who you talk to. Many parents are still insisting that it does, but I think the latest medical data says no.
