Why do antibotics effect my platlet count? was created by fcub2
I have my platelets checked weekly and I noticed that when I've been on antibotics for a sinus infection or for what ever reasion for four or five days before there checked that my platelet count goes up. I've asked my hemitoligist about this and he just kind of blows the subject off and keeps trying to push Promacta off on me. I've been told that my body is producing platlets but my immune system is causing the problem. Promacta is designed to jack your platelet production into high gear but I don't have a production problem. I whould like to find out how/why antibotics effect Platelet counts.

Same here, when I was on antibiotics for H-pylori, within a week my platelets increased by 100K. After I stopped taking the anti-biotics my efforts to taper off prednisone dropped my counts back. There has to be something about antibiotics and ITP

Someone here recently posted that the first treatment for h pylori didn't totally kill it off, and they re=treated and ended up with a sustained remission. That was one person's experience/opinion. It seemed plausible, have you been retested?

Also it seems like some with ITP have increases in counts from antibiotics and others have decreases. Same with response to illness without antibiotic treatment.

It may not be the antibiotics causing the rise. It may be an overall increase from the bone marrow to provide white cells (B & T) that fight infections and viruses and the platelets came along for the ride. I typically see an increase when I'm fighting something although my hemo says most see drops. Thrombocytopenia is a documemented side effect on many antibiotics. I definately see a drop if I take augmentin.

Most, if not all, ITPers do have a production problem but they have only just recognised this and many haematologists don't seem to know it just yet.

Production problems are a part of ITP and it is not widely known, as Ann says.

I've had a rise from some antibiotics and have had a drop from others. Many things can affect counts, and antibiotics are definitely one of them. Getting a rise is usually short lived; you can't stay on antibiotics long-term.
