Splenectomy failed was created by Joya
Hey you all,

Hope everbody is doing ok! My splenectomy was about a month ago.. Yesterday I discovered some bruises when I was in de shower.. I sort of paniced but my aunt and a friend convinced me it could just be a normal bruise..

Today I decided to go to get a CBC just for my own feeling.. And ofcourse.. counts dropped from 300 (2 weeks ago) to 47.. Need to get another CBC on thursday and then we'll probably start Rituxin..

Xx

My splenectoy also was a failure. We got concerned that a 'phantom' spleen existed or that the surgeon missed a few pieces and it re-grew. Eventually had a radio-graphic analysis. This is when they inject you with a radio-isotope and see if there is a blood concentration. As the spleen is blood-rich, it would show higher levels of radiation. I did not have any spleen left and my platelet count never went up. The Rituxand worked for me, but only once for 9 months. The re-treatment did not work. However some of us on this site had many years of continued success. I hope it does for you............

sorry to hear your counts are down. It is very frustrating. Keeping you in my thoughts. Let me know how the rituxin goes. I'm still waiting to hear from my doctor how my counts are today.

Sorry to hear that they are back down, but I suppose that is the risk you have to take when having it removed, it is not always going to work for everyone, hope u can get them back up

Thanks for the support everybody..

I knew this could happen so I was prepared for it.. It just sucks really bad.. But oh well.. I'm not going to stress about it anymore.. We'll just have to take it one step at the time..

Your platelets can bounce around after a splenectomy. I would not declare it "failed" at this point. Wait to see how your counts are over the next several weeks. Sending positive energy your way for high platelets.

Sorry, Joya. Anything can happen at this point though. You never know.

I am happy that your attitude is so positive even with the disappointment. Good job!

Oh Joya, I'm sorry it didn't work.....yet. I know in the long run...it's gonna be alright though!

Hey everybody,

I asked my hem. if we could consider the slenectomy failed and he said yes..
And the biggest problem is that I can't wait around and see what my counts are going to do.. I have all my sport exams in the next couple of weeks.. I'm getting another CBC tomorrow and if my counts are lower we'll start treating with rituxin..

It's weird how my whole family is panicing and everybody is feeling so bad for me.. But actually I feel fine.. It sucks big time.. but I guess that's life.. The daughter of my moms best friend called me today: "Joya! My mom told me you were very depressed! Are you okay?!" And I was like: Uhmm depressed?! who told you that.. I'm on a terras with my classmates having a drink so I wouldn't consider myself depressed :P haha..

Am curious to know how me counts will be tomorrow..

Xx

Hi Joya,

I'm sorry that your splenectomy failed. Both of mine failed (The first for my spleen 2 years ago and end of April this year for the accessory spleens). As of monday my platelet count is 27.

I'm glad you are still in good spirits :)

I am sorry to hear about your splenectomy. My son had a splenectomy 6 months ago. It too failed, and he dropped back to less than 20K, but here is the good news: he is now treatable with steroids or IVIG. Before the surgery nothing brought his platlets above 12K, and he was living at less than 5K. Now, after his last IVIG, he was at 290,000! 2 weeks later he was down to 105,000, and I'm sure he is still dropping, but it is such a relief to have something to offer him to get platelets. He is 14 and loves sports, so this has been really hard for him. (He has had ITP for 2.5 years) I hope your ITP also becomes more treatable. It is a consolation prize, but better than nothing. Good luck.
