dizziness

dizziness was created by norita
Hi

I was wondering if anyone ever experiences dizziness with a low platelet count? The reason I ask this is because I read in the last edition of The Platelet (UK newsletter) that it was one of the symptoms reported in a recent survey of ITP in the UK, and it got me thinking. I had a bout of dizziness that lasted a few days before Christmas when my count was low, but I thought it could be due to a sinus infection (I had been sneezing a lot). Over the last week I have been feeling dizzy again, and I know my count is low (it was 21 just a few weeks ago, and I've started getting one or two bruises - am going for a count on Monday). So I started to wonder if it's the ITP.
I'm on 10mg steroids at the moment (don't know if that can make you dizzy), and it's possible I have low Ferratin, since this has happened before, and I understand that can make you dizzy.
Has anyone else experienced this? I will mention it to the consultant next week (I did mention it to the GP last time, and he was not concerned).
Thanks

Norita

Norita:

Yes, I did have dizziness when my count was low. It was a weird dizzy; I'd be sitting at my desk at work and the whole room would tilt sideways for a few seconds. It happened each time my count was low, so I couldn't blame other things then.

Mmm, it's odd isn't it? I've had that sudden room-is-tilting feeling too, though at the moment it's more persistent low-level giddiness. Can't think how low platelets could cause that.

I don't know either, but the only time in my life that I've ever had the room tilt like that was when counts were under 10. I've been dizzy many times since counts have been up, but not like that.

Norita,

based on having low counts only once, i wasn't dizzie as much as equilibrium was off. I would get nauseous sitting in car and driving through winding roads. That doesn't happen anymore.

Yeah.. I've been getting dizzy... but I don't know if it's from low counts or the Pred... I had a little dizzy spell today, in fact... JUST like what Sandi said. It's like, "Woop! The room has tilted!"... very very odd.

Thanks for the replies. Has anyone ever asked their doctor about this?

When my son was first diagnosed he complained quite a lot about being dizzy - eloquently described it the doctor as him standing still while the world tipped up around him! One day when it coincided with some other problem I can't remember now, we spent 10 hours or so in the children's ward. At the beginning of the day, he had very low blood pressure which gradually returned to something like normal throughout the day and at the same time his dizziness wore off. So the doctor put it down to his blood pressure being off.

My only misgiving about this as a diagnosis though is that he has had very very low blood pressure since then without any dizziness.....I dunno.

Ali :)

Yes one of my first symptoms with itp was dizzyness, although I was working on a farm & in the heat when I was diagnosed. I'm very heat sensitive, I thought I was going to pass out. Haven't had this problem since my counts have been good - for 3 years!!! :-)
