Random Swelling was created by tigereyes
I am no stranger to feet/leg swelling but today my ankle was throbbing a bit and i looked down and my feet are HUGE. I havent eaten anything with salt (have been avoiding it like the plague) Im down to 10mg of prednison and cant understand why I am swelling so much to the point that it hurts. In all honestly my feet/ankles look like my sisters when she was 8 months pregnant. It hurts to walk and my shooes and socks left marks. I took them off and evelated my feet here at the office.

I had a lot of swelling in both feet yesrs ago. I had a blood clot in my kidney. As I walked I could feel the water moving. (It really felt like I had ocean waves in my feet with every step.) I had to take the laces out of my shoes, and still had a rough time putting on my shoes so I could go to urgent care. I hope you have already gone to a doctor and the issue is being looked at. If not, I would suggest getting into the emergency room as soon as you can.

No new medications. My rhema wanted to increase my imuran dose but it never got called into the pharmacy so Im still at the same dose for 6 weeks now. The only thing that has changed is my prednison dropped and its been 2 weeks since that. Im not sure but my right leg hurts when I put any type of pressure on in even walking hurts, but my left foot is more swollen. I havent had a urine test in probably 3 months. Perhaps its time to get another one done. If it continues to hurt I may head to the ER something about this isnt right.

Tiger, I'm having random swelling too, from my ankles up to the middle of my calves and the area is tender. If i sink my finger into my ankle it leaves a dent! I'm planning to go get a kidney function test tomoro. Been having some high blood pressure issues since my diagnosis so I dont know if it's that. I'll be praying for you

Im down to 10mg a day. I know my bp is normal. I had them check at work 120/80 very normal for me. It hurts to walk, I cant get up and walk and I think that help with circulation but Im not sure.

Well I'm at the hospital waiting to get an ultrasound. He's worried it may be a clot. Even with counts being 65 he wanted it done today. He wrote me a script for lacis (sp) and potassium to help the edema.

Glad to hear it's not a clot, but did he give you any indication of what might be causing the swelling?

It has helped alot with the swelling I can put my shoes on today. I completely forgot to ask for the urine test. Everything happened in such a rush, labs ran...he came in worried that there might be a DVT and ran right out to the hospital for the stat us. He called it edema.

No my hematologist. It is so much easier to get in touch with him. The last 2 messages I left to get a refill I still havent heard back. My hema ended up writing me the rx to get me through until I see my rhema. Shes a great dr her staff not so much.

I'm having swelling too. Both lower legs, ankles and feet. My left is worse than my right though. My PCP was going to give me Lasix but didn't know if it would interfere with the NPlate. I go to see hematologist on Wednesday. I've been told in the past that I have poor circulation in my legs. Years ago I had tiny red dots on my feet and ankles, the doc said it was blood pooling in my feet and it was tatooing my skin from the inside out! It went away mostly. So...how do they know it it's water or blood that's causing the swelling?

I have no idea. But I can tell you that I think the swelling is better then the lasix. I have a horrible headace, stomach pains, and overall feeling of blah. Apparenlty this is a common side effect and I think Id rather deal with the swelling then with this. I will in no way be able to function like this at work. I havent gotten out of bed today.

Well, the swelling may have gotten worse. You can't mess around with edema. I wish the cause would have been determined.

the lasix is 20mg--generic furosemide, and a huge horsepill of potassium the bottle says Pot Cl Micro 20MEQ. I think the big thing was to determine if I had a clot. They need to figure this out I cant function like this. I feel so sick.

I break it in half and take 10mg furosemide.

Could the huge horse pill of potassium be the problem and not the furosemide?

Potassium will cause the stomach problems. I've been on mega-doses of that. It can cause diarrhea and cramps.

Well, that doesn't sound to encouraging! I was going to take the lasix, if my doc said it was ok, but now I don't know. I have been so "blah" myself for a couple of weeks now. Seriously, I sleep 6 to 8 hours a nite and take 2 2hour naps...everyday! Ugh! I have been thinking also how can I possibly go back to work feeling like this? If lasix makes it worse.....forget it! There has to be an answer.

I was extremly dehydrated. Thats where the horrible headache came from. The stomach upset isnt really that bad goes away after about 1/2. But Im still dehydrated. My boyfriend ran out and got me a few bottles of gateroaid and I felt much better after drinking that. Still today Im finding that the headache is creaping up on me that I need to drink more. I didnt realize how much this would make you get dehyrated. I havent taken any today...but Im still getting dehyrated. I would think I would have to pee more but Im not, that kinda worries me. I will be checking in tomorrow.

Tiger: I'm surprised the dianosis is not DVT. Was this confirmed by an UltraSound? Another option is phlebitis...something akin to a periferal blood cot. This is a venous clot near the surface. Had one in my forearm. My family Doc initially diagnosed it as Tendenitis. Next day my Hemo Doc confirmed Phlebitis. It typically does not move but the symptoms are similar to a DVT. With Phlebitis in my forearm, I kept it in a sling to minmize the pain and swelling. Three months later had a genuine DVT in my calf... confirmed by Untrasound. Now I'm permanently on Coumadan and still taking 20mg Pred.

It could be many things, or nothing. Having Lupus, I'd be concerned about the kidneys. But Jen, don't worry about that right now...just get yourself leveled out. Good thought about dehydration...duh - I should have thought of that!
