When are you in "remission", is it normal counts or is it not having to treat? I have been in the 45K-55K range for a year now holding steady after Rituxan last May, so am I in remission? Just wondering. I knew I'd find the answer here.

Thanks
Andra

You'll get many different answers.

To me remission means steady counts and no treatment. I went into "remission" with counts between 85k & 125k for just over 9 years [I never remember if 8 or 9 years] before a tetanus booster tanked my count. I'm back in "remission" again, almost 8 years, with lower than norm counts but no treatment.

According to Guidelines, there are CR's (complete remissions) and PR's (partial remissions). I'd say you have a partial remission. Not a bad place to be as long as you don't have to treat.

Replying to Melinda's comment;
Can you confirm the Tetanus booster affected your count? I'm considering a vacination for Shingles. But the family Doc sorta implied it is quite similar to having a booster if you've had Chicken Pox. At the moment my count is so low that it really can't tank much lower.

Only confirmation I have would be that it was just a very short time after the booster that my count started going down, after years being stable between 85k & 125k. I wasn't sick, the weather was fine, nothing going on, life was normal - except for that booster.

Regarding the shingles vaccination - I am not going to get the shingles vaccine as it is a live virus.

Thanks for the thoughts! You all pretty much said what I was thinking but it was nice to have some back-up!

hairball: I have to chime in that I will never be sure if it was the iguana bite or the tetanus shot right after that was my trigger. We respond differently to these things. I believe that for many of us there were triggers. If something foreign enters the bloodstream the immune system can over react such as over active antibodies. Our immune systems are very different so we don't know how it will respond. I had quite a few vaccines in the last few months and fortunately no worsening for the platelets, but I will get nervous when it comes time for my tetanus booster. On the other side though, getting shingles vs the vaccination would probably be more of a challenge. Definitely no live vaccines.

Andra: enjoy!!!!! That is terrific.
