Lib needs an anti-depressant recommendation

This is Lib. I'm a mess. Hubby saw the medical bills & threw me out, my platelets had crashed badly & are still under 20, and I can't find a SAFE antidepressant that works. I've been on too many to list, is there a list of ITP safe ones I can consult?

Whaaaaat? I'm so sorry, Lib!

As far as the 'safe' antidepressants, everyone is different and what might be ok for one person might not be ok for another. No drug is 100% safe for everyone. I understand the desire for an antidepressant (believe me, I do), but in the absence of that, there are other ways to manage stress and depression. It isn't easy. I have about three doctors trying to push them on me but the drugs don't solve anything, just cause side effects (been there with that too).

I hear you about not adding meds but I'm a wreck. I haven't been this bad since I was a teen, I'm 61 now. I don't know what else to do. I talk to a shrink but I'm seriously coming unraveled. I'm open to suggestions but right now it's hard to even feed myself, let alone start a meditation regimen or really get ANYTHING done. I've thought about 10 voluntary days in a psych hospital but all I can think about is all the stuff that already falls through the cracks & how much worse it'll be when I get out. I need help. I needed my husband, damn him.

I wish I had some answers for you, Lib. If you really want an antidepressant, keep going down the list, I guess. Your doctor might have more suggestions for you.

Soooo sorry to hear,
As Sandi said everyone has a different response to medication. The only thing that worked for me was cognitive therapy. Hopefully in a short while you will be able to look back on this and offer advice to others suffering the same way. Lots of love and hugs coming your way. XXX :) :) :)

After looking at all the options, we're going with Lithium and closely monitoring my lithium levels. Cross your fingers. I'm sick of crying.

Lib - do you have an e-mail address? I can't seem to access the PM's on here.

Hi there - my sister has dealt with depression and anxiety for years, and Lexapro has worked for her, in combination with a therapist. Is your therapist working with you to consider medication? You could also consider seeing a nurse practitioner. Do you have a safe place to go in the meantime? If you feel that you need to be taken care of in a hospital setting, there is *nothing* wrong with that. As for things slipping by, none of them are as important as your health.

Lexapro is an SSRI, not OK for ITPers. Most of the newer ones are SSRIs, that's the problem. The lithium seems to be helping, or maybe it's just being away from home.
