Would like to ask a few questions of anyone with both ITP and clotting issues that have developed Esophageal varices that have required periodic endoscopies.

I have never heard anyone here talk about that problem, sorry. Your daughter has developed this?

When Kimberly developed the clotting issue, her body began to make collateral veins. From what I understand the development of esophageal varices is common when the body begins to develop collateral path ways. I read a story of a PDSA member I believe in Tenn. that had the same thing and like Kimberly needed numerous esophageal bandings. What happens is that the veins in the esophagus become bloated and thinned, making the highly dangerous for hemorrhage. The scary thing is these things from what I'm told don't just bleed, they gush when they go. The patient then bleeds out in a very short period of time.
Kimberly now has a standing order for an endoscopy every three months to make sure none have developed to the point that would require banding. When you think about it, if you band one off, the body still needs the path way and so will develop another and another and another and so on.

I'm so sorry. She has sure been through it all and then some. How are her counts since the Cytoxan? Any more clots?

Cytoxan didn't seem to do anything but make her loose her hair and make her feel bad. Since then she's had two hospitalizations where her platelets both times dropped below 3 and her Hemo was around 5.
Numbers are good now, 300 and 10, but each week they are gradually dropping ever so slightly.

Ah, just realized. That's two people that have achieved remission from both Cytoxan and Rituxan. A Clow's daughter and user 'packh1@yahoo.com'.

Sorry HAL9000 I just saw your post. I am sorry to say Kimberly did not achieve remission with Cytoxan. Nor Rituxan. In fact she became highly allergic to Rituxan after an anaphylactic episode. As far as the Cytoxan, all it seems to have done for her is make her hair fall out and give her intense pain due to the growth factor meds she had to take afterwards.

Oh, ok. Sorry, I thought it was Cytoxan that gave her the 300 and 10 count. I see now that it was whatever she got at the hospital.
