As anyone else experienced that their other physicians, like primary or ob/gyn, think that low platelet count is no big deal. The only doctor that seems to be concerned is the hematologist.

Same for me Sandi. My haemo wasn't at all impressed when my GP initially said I couldn't go back on the front line with a count of less than 50.

I once had an ER doctor tell me (prior to a CBC) that my last count couldn't possibly have been 8k or I would have been in the hospital. I wasn't there for the ITP, but when my count came back at 40k, he was all smug and said, "See? Your count isn't that low". Well yeah, dude, I've been on steroids for the last few days! He didn't believe me.

 That is pretty unusual! I usually have to talk all of my other doctors off the ledge when they see my low platelet count in CBC results. I had a new ob/gyn call me frantically because my count was 40. I laughed and explained about my ITP and she was fine after hearing that I was being treated by a hematologist. After shopping around, I have an awesome hematologist who doesn't bat an eye and urge treatment changes even with a count around 20. It's so relaxing to be able to manage my symptoms how I want to instead of always being on the defensive with a doctor who wants higher numbers than I do.

As long as your counts are above 30 or you don't have any symptoms at a lower number, be thankful for fewer panicky doctors! That's a good thing :)

Opposite for me too. I had a dermatologist who wouldn’t remove a small mole unless she had a note from my hematologist that said it would be ok and at the time my platelets were over 100k,

Opposite for me too - hematologist said I could have brain surgery at 50k, she says 80k and 60k are really the same - my "-ist" doctors want an ok from her. Only ones not upset with my ITP were the paramedics who helped me in January when I had a freak fall and split open my head on the edge of a rock/brick planter & bled like crazy, also broke left shoulder - the paramedics all knew what ITP was, the ED doc knew ITP & ordered a brain CT but not a count - and my normal dentist knows ITP and it just has never come up as a problem with him.
