Platelets high but petechia in hands and feet

Over the weekend I developed petechia in my hands and feet. Last time that happened I ended up in A&E and levels at 5,000.
I got a FBC yesterday in the hospital and my levels were at 205,000.

My hematologist said the former if ITP I have can cause a rash like this as the platelets clump together.

Had anyone ever heard of this? I only thought petechia happened for low blood platelet counts

Petechiae can occur at any number. I've seen people have petechiae around their eyes if they sneeze hard or vomit. I have also had petechiae on my hands with normal counts, and I realized it was because I had been sleeping with my hand under my head and the circulation got cut off. It can happen on feet if you sit cross-legged for a while or wear tight socks....situations like that.

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

Petechia can be caused by many things not just ITP

Thanks folks, turns out that any form in disturbance to your vascular system as a result of heat (change of weather) or Virus can cause your Platelets to fail and clump and form together to cause petechia. I also had the start of tongue petechia with blistering on the side. My Haematologist told me to come in anytime this happens as it could be low platelets or not but not to take any chances.
Its a weird one as I thought that this would be my alarm bell for platelets dropping, its turns out that no you really need to keep yourself regularly monitored as petechia might not be the a critical drop in platelets. My never dropped past 170 which I found very weird. But this is the impact ITP now has on my blood, I guess you never really go into remission.

You're right in that many things that can cause petechia but petechia only occurs when you have and underlying heath issue. With ITP it can occur more frequently as the platelets are abnormal once exposure to any vascular changes and reduce any common virus.

I've known people who had petechiae and didn't have any health issues. It can happen from sneezing, coughing hard, vomiting or simply cutting off circulation. They are caused by broken capillaries/blood vessels and are more common as we age because vessels tend to weaken as we get older. Vitamin C can help to strengthen vessels. I have never heard of platelet clumping causing petechiae....

Prolonged Straining
Petechiae that appear on the chest, neck, and face are often caused by excessive straining, such as during childbirth, or from heavy lifting or weightlifting.
They may also happen as a result of choking, consistent vomiting, violent coughing, and prolonged crying.

At any rate, I'm glad your counts are good!
