Curious to hear at what point are platelets so low that hospitalization is necessary? My lowest has been 4K and no hospitalization.
Want to avoid an admission as long as I can.

I only went to the hospital when I had active bleeding. Some doctors want you to go in with low counts. Generally it would be to to get IVIG and monitor counts closely.

That depends on the doctor and the patient. There isn't a set number. If there is active bleeding, that would be a reason to be hospitalized but the count itself is not a reason. I was working with counts under 5k, was never hospitalized. Some doctors are very cautious and hospitalize based on counts, but it's not necessary.

At 4k, you're already about as low as you can go. Anything under 5k is considered to be pretty much the same number. If you took another sample an hour later, that number could change to 1k or 7k. Platelets fluctuate constantly and the analyzers have a margin of error.

I went to GP covered in bruises from a minor gardening mishap.
FBC sent to lab. Platelet count came back at 12. I was hospitalised for 1 night.
After a gazillion more blood tests and 45mg of Pred my count stayed at 12 so I was discharged the next morning and have been treated as an outpatient ever since even when my count dropped to 2 with blood dripping from my nose.
My haemo adopts a treat the symptoms not the count approach which suits me.

When I dropped below 5k I was called and told to come back immediately to start IVIG treatment. I am in a larger city with a Cancer Center that I went to each day for 8hrs for 3 days. There wasn't a need for hospitalization with no bleeding and the Cancer Center offering the IVIG.

i was sent when they got to 7k. She was more worried they would keep dropping because we have been following them weekly and I was have 50k drops a week (after high from Dex) . I was at my check up appt. she tested again there and I was sent to the hospital from there. 4 days. IVIG then first round of Rituxan then the other 3 outpatient. So far so good 2 months out!
The next morning before treatment I was down to 3k so likely she made the right decision.

Good luck with Rituxin.I had the same as you IVIG in hospital ,Rituxin- four infusions.I had an 8 year remission which ended this past Oct..
I am told I might not be able to have Rituxinagain due to a problem with a Heptitis test being inconclusive.

Perhaps you will have an even longer remission!

That is my hope as well. Even if it's 8 years I will be thrilled. I know many it doesn't work well for but so far for me it has. I would rather have a horrible 4-6 weeks and forget about it then do weekly shots or take pills. I can handle quarterly blood draws.

kae, good to hear that you are doing well.
Can I put you down in my notes as a row 1 remission (in my treatments table) with Rituxan? Sound about right? I've got that you responded well to Dex. IVIG, not so clear. Sounds like you took it starting with Rituxan. Exactly how long your IVIG response is/was isn't clear. As the IVIG wore off, the Rituxan kicked in?
