Medic alert bracelet

This may seem an odd question and may have been answered somewhere. I looked for awhile and I am new so please forgive me if this is already mentioned on another thread. My 19 yr old has ITP. Her platelets are currently at 33,000 and dropping. She has bruises all over her legs and gets mild nose bleeds. Should I get her a medic alert bracelet? Maybe I am over reacting but I fear she could get in a car wreck or fall and hit her head (she's pretty clumsy) while I am not around to let first responders know that she has ITP. Is this disorder even common enough that they would recognize what it means if it was on a bracelet?
Thanks!

My son has chronic ITP with a current count of 7. He's 17 and drives so he wears a necklace I had made that says ITP Low Platelets. He also has a key chain that says the same. I had ITP on the 1st line and then Low Platelets on the 2nd.

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

When I went to see the hematologist about my ITP I asked if I should get a medical ID bracelet (my count ranges from 30,000-50,000, but it likes to sit closer to 30,000 most of the time), and he said it was a good idea, so I'd say better safe than sorry? I go to college two states away from home so I wear my ID bracelet any time I go outside in case something happens to me while I'm not with anyone who knows about my condition.

If you're worried about someone not knowing what ITP means, I have my Med ID say "ITP bleed disorder" on one of the lines (the other ones have my name, platelet count range, and in case of emergency numbers), so if someone doesn't know what ITP stands for they can at least still know that it's related to bleeding! And, as a little bonus in case YOU want your daughter to wear a bracelet but SHE doesn't want an ugly little band around her wrist (I know I definitely didn't), they make very lovely medical jewelry online that you can get! I got mine from Lauren's Hope, but it's not the only place available.

I wear one even though my counts have been normalized for a few months, they just drop so fast I figure it is better to have.
I created mine and it says ITP alert but after I created it I read that you should put "Low platelet alert" or some variation as not everyone will know what ITP is . Also I am active so I got a Road ID I can wear anytime without discomfort, it is a silicone bracelet with a metal information plate. I do not ever need to remove it and therefore don't loose it, I am good at loosing things. (I figure at 19 they may be active).

I am recently diagnosed and very clumsy. When I was diagnosed and hovering between 10 and 20 my husband and I decided it was best to take the simple precautions. I found a bracelet with cute interchangeable bands and wear it everyday...just in case.
Mine says:
ITP - Low Platelets
Bleeding Disorder
NO NSAIDS

Oh, I hadn't even thought of putting "no NSAIDS" on there. I will make sure to do that! I am still trying to find one that I think she will like. Thanks for your reply!

Yeah that was suggested by my one nurse. I found mine at n-styleid.com and I really like It! I have made myself bands and I have found some at craft storws. It gives me more style options!

My husband has ITP and his platelets are usually 30k or less. He is not a jewelry guy. I found a site that has silicone medical alert bracelets. I ordered him a red one. You can get embossed on it whatever you want. It's waterproof and will last forever. The med-alert part is white and the ITP and platelet count is simply embossed on the silicone but not colored for privacy purposes. Contrary to popular belief, first-responders don't look in your wallet first so that's not a good place to keep anything like that.

Like PurdueRose I wear a RoadID. Mine says ITP/ LOW PLATELETS, and I got one with an online profile. The inside of the band has a serial number and pin which first responders can use to access my spouse and sister's contact info, allergies, doc's info, etc. You can include as much or as little info as you choose. My spouse and sister weren't comfortable with me wearing their phone numbers on my wrist, but I wanted it accessible in case of emergency. This keeps their info more private.

Someone also recently suggested to me putting a big button/ badge on my seat belt, as it would be even more clear to first responders, and prompt them to look for my medical alert bracelet. I wasn't able to find such a thing online, but have been toying with the idea of making one.
