Colonoscopy

So, I finally got my number high enough to have a colonoscopy (tomorrow.) I’m deep into my prep today and I read, on the internet, that the magnesium citrate I’ve taken, (and still have to take,) for prep, interacts with Promacta. Can’t believe neither my hematologist nor my internal med team thought to point this out. I’m HOPING it just means that it lessens the absorption of the Promacta, since it’s too late to stop now.

My procedure is scheduled for 8 am and I am not supposed to take in anything by mouth after 4 am. But I’m supposed to take my last dose of the magnesium at midnight. Was planning on waking myself up at 4 to take the Promacta and my thyroid meds. Think it’s safe to assume that since it’s 4 hours post-magnesium that it’ll be ok? Don’t really want to chance a missed dose.

Anyone?

Thanks!

When I had my colonoscopy a few weeks ago, I skipped Promacta the night before. It should be noted my counts were 134 or so a few days earlier - purposely that high.
I realize you'd probably like not to skip. Have you thought about taking it at 4 am?

Yes. That’s what I asked above. If I wake myself up to take it at 4:00, it would be 4 hours post-magnesium and 4 hours pre-op. Think that’s ok? I was at 139 last week and 117 today.

LOL, guess you gave me the idea. Sounds like you've got a good plan to me. With a 117 count the doc should be able to worry about what he's doing and not worry about bleeding from low counts. My doc removed a small polyp without any issue. I guess that puts me on the 5 year plan.

When they wheel you in and ask how you are doing, tell them 'you're ready and can't wait any more'. When I did it, everyone in the room laughed. Always good to keep the tension down in that situation.

I can still remember the giant omelette I had at I-Hop after it was over. Food is so good after fasting for a day.

Good luck...

Thanks Hal! While I’m glad my number is finally high enough to do this, I’m about ready to be done already!

penlyn- I think your plan is good to take your meds at 4am. Four hours after you take the magnesium citrate should be enough- and even if it does inhibit absorption a bit, probably most of the Promacta will be absorbed. good luck! hope you get some sleep tonight.
When I had mine, the first dose of prep did nothing! I was really worried. But then the second dose really did the job. As they say drink lots of water! I made my own jello out of celery and apple juice- interesting. The prep is much worse than the procedure- the actual colonoscopy was so quick! I went out with my son for a huge Japanese meal afterwards. As Hal said, food tasted so delicious! Then I read on my instructions "eat lightly after your colonoscopy" oops

Oops!

Thanks posey and Hal. I ended up taking my meds at 3:50, (just in case, lol,) and all was fine. Had both an endoscopy and colonoscopy, was clean, and am now on the 10 year plan.

Posey, I had the same reaction. After the first dose nothing much happened, but the second sure took care of that! Glad it’s over. I eased back in with some probiotic yogurt and a protein bar. But there may be more before this day is over!
