Father and Daughter with ITP was created by Moe1327
I was official diagnosed with Immune TP in July. My father was recently admitted to hospital with chest pains and his blood test came back with very low platelets (20). He is now being treated with predisone and IVIG infusions. How common is it to have family members have this, I was told that it is not hereditary, but this seems very strange to me?? Help.

My sister and I have both had it. There are types of familial ITP, but if that is not the case, it is probably a coincidence that you both ended up with the same autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune disorders can run in families, but usually, everyone has different ones. How old is your father? Has he started any new medications lately?

Here is some info on familial ITP:

Is it possible there is an environment issue? Do you live in same place?

My sister was diagnosed about 16 years before I was, so it probably wasn't environmental in our case. We lived in different places. She went into remission after a year (she was 16). I went into remission after 8 years (I was about 36).

Sandi, I mean Moe1327 and her father. Their diagnoses are so close, so I think it is possible that they are related to environment, or same virus/food/etc.

It's possible, but we don't know what their individual situations are.
