Hi,
I have not posted in a "long" time, due to many other health problems, ITP not one of them. Now, on top of them my counts are slowly dropping again. Not in danger range or anything, but it got me thinking back to what my hemo. doctor said to me when he removed my spleen "this will probably last about 15 years". My normal counts were 1000, I spent more time in the hospital, then at home. My white count is still high, and my blood work is still off, could be because I don't have a spleen. Its been 8 years, and "yes" I am sick all the time, but it is better that the constant steroids, and other IV treatments I had to endure, that lasted 2 days, and caused me to puke for 4 days.

I just wondered if anyone else had any experience with this kind of situation in the long term. I have read the studies, but they are studies....

Mary - it's odd that your doctor would give you a time period for how long he thought the splenectomy would last. It can fail right away or 40 years down the line. There isn't a 15 year deadline. Hopefully, your counts will stabilize and you won't have to think about treating again. If you do though, there are other treatments that are better than IVIG and steroids which will allow you to lead a more normal life.

Wow, thanks for responding, I guess because it was so cronitc, and I was 47 when it was removed, he was going by the text book. And due to the fact I just didn't respond to the treatments available at the time, well you can see where this is going, man I have had sepsis, shingles, you name it since I had my spleen removed, ya, counts got better, and I am not in the hostpital as much, but you get other issues. But, still happy to be off the roids lol

Hi Mary,
I had a splenectomy done as a child (that's what they did back then) and I'm still dealing with my ITP 32 or so years later. Post-splenectomy, my white cell counts have always been kinda random and wacky. That is to be expected of anyone post-splenectomy, according to my doctor. However, despite the wonky white cell counts, I am rarely sick. I think that's just one of those individual variance things. With all of the options available now (I'm currently on Promacta), I would never go back to steroids either.

Hopefully your counts will stay high enough that you won't require any treatment for the immediate future.
