I had ITP following MMR vaccine when I was around a year old. I had IGIV twice a month until I was around 6/7 years old and the ITP went away.

Now, I am 29 years old and want to apply to grad school, and unfortunately, I picked the healthcare field. Didn't factor in my previous negative vaccine reaction. To apply to grad school I need 2 doses of MMR, 2 doses of vericella vaccine, and tetanus shot. I know I got one dose of MMR, but after that and the 5 years of ITP my parents were scared to give me more vaccines.

Anyone have experience with post vaccine ITP, remission, and then getting vaccinated again? Is this just asking for trouble? Not sure what to do, as I already have all the prerequisites done for grad school but now I'm scared of getting vaccinated again.

Oh my, five years of IVIG. Chronic yet acute.

We only live once. IMHO, no one could pay me enough to take the risk. But it is easy for me to say that since I'm retired.

This is on the vaccine insert that was published by Merck (vaccine manufacturer):

Thrombocytopenia
Individuals with current thrombocytopenia may develop more severe thrombocytopenia following vaccination.
In addition, individuals who experienced thrombocytopenia with the first dose of M-M-RII(or its component vaccines)
may develop thrombocytopenia with repeat doses. Serologic status may be evaluated to determine whether or not additional doses of vaccine are needed. The potential risk to benefit ratio should be carefully evaluated before considering vaccination
in such cases. (SEE ADVERSE REACTIONS)

You have a couple of options that may help - you can get titres for the diseases and if you are immune you will not need to get any further immunizations. Or your physician can provide documentation that you cannot receive the the immunizations for medical reasons and that should give you an exemption.
I work in a Pediatricians office - we have successfully handled both scenarios.
